The Emotional Roots of Physical Symptoms

Have you ever had a symptom that no test could quite explain — persistent fatigue, diffuse pain, tension that keeps returning to the same place? Sometimes the missing piece isn’t only physical. Over twenty-five years of energy work and thousands of conversations with clients, we’ve seen the same pattern again and again: the body often mirrors our inner world. Our thoughts, emotions, energy and life experiences leave their mark not only on the mind but on the body too.

This is the heart of what we call the Energy Code — and it’s an introduction to it, not a diagnosis. None of this replaces medical care. Seek healthcare when you need it. The energetic perspective is a complementary path: a way to give understanding, and some power, back to you.

The body as a mirror, not a machine

Conventional medicine tends to see the body as a separate mechanical system. A holistic view sees it differently — as a mirror of everything you carry: your feelings, your history, your energy. From this angle, a symptom isn’t only a malfunction to be silenced. It can also be a message — a signal pointing to something inside that’s asking to be seen.

We say this not to place blame. It would be cruel and wrong to tell anyone their illness is “their fault.” The point is the opposite: understanding the possible energetic layer of a symptom can restore a sense of agency, and open a door that purely physical approaches sometimes leave closed.

Suppressed emotions: the most common thread

Of everything that’s emerged in our work, one connection stands out above all: suppressed emotions and physical symptoms.

Many of us learned as children to hold our feelings back. Security is a child’s most fundamental need, and if we sense that the adults around us can’t handle our emotions, we instinctively shut them down to stay safe. It happens unconsciously — but the emotions don’t disappear. They get locked away in the body and the subconscious, where they remain until we’re ready to face them.

The problem is that when we switch off contact with our emotions, we also switch off contact with the body’s signals. Emotions are messengers — they help us feel our needs, what’s good for us, what to avoid. They even regulate parts of the nervous system and the release of hormones like cortisol, adrenaline, oxytocin and serotonin. Push them down for long enough, and that unexpressed energy can show up as tension, fatigue, diffuse pain, or contribute to longer-term ill health.

Other energetic influences

Suppressed emotion isn’t the only strand. In our work we also keep meeting a handful of other recurring influences:

  • Lineage and DNA — patterns and burdens passed down a family line.
  • Past lives and cellular memory — old imprints the body seems to remember; a classic example is a “silenced voice” in another life echoing as recurring throat or thyroid trouble today.
  • Upbringing and inner beliefs — the templates we absorbed about ourselves as children.
  • The collective and society — the wider pressures and expectations we all carry.

You don’t have to believe every layer literally. Take what resonates. The value is in widening the lens beyond “something is broken” toward “something in me is asking to be met.”

How inner healing begins

Healing in this framework isn’t dramatic — it starts with honesty and gentleness. It begins by letting yourself feel what you’ve been holding, rather than pushing it down again. From there, working with intention, self-compassion and simple energetic practices helps that stored energy move and release. Meeting yourself where you are, with sincerity and openness, is what allows the future to change.

Explore your body’s messages: the Energy Code app

Our book The Energy Code maps the possible energetic and emotional causes behind common symptoms and body systems — and the app makes that guidance easy to use in the moment. Look up a symptom, read its possible energetic meaning, and get advice and healing affirmations to work with. And when you want direction, an intuitive guide lets you use pure intuition or a pendulum to find your own answers.

Frequently asked questions

Are you saying illness is caused by emotions?
No. Symptoms usually have many causes. We’re saying there is often an additional energetic or emotional layer worth understanding — alongside, never instead of, medical care.

Isn’t this just blaming people for being sick?
It’s the opposite of blame. The aim is understanding and empowerment — giving you a door to work on, not guilt to carry.

Where do most people start?
With suppressed emotion — gently allowing yourself to feel what you’ve been holding back is often the single most powerful first step.

Should I stop my medical treatment?
Never on the basis of this alone. Keep your medical care and use these tools as a complement; combining the two can support healing.
