What are the houses in astrology?
Your birth chart is a circle divided into twelve slices. Each slice is a house, and each house represents a different stage and theme of life. Planets sitting in a house light up that area — and when planets move through a house over time (transits), they activate its themes too.
The houses are calculated from the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born — your ascendant, or rising sign. That’s why you need your birth time and place, not just your birthday, to map them accurately.
Whole sign houses: our approach
There are several house systems in astrology, which is why two charts can place the houses slightly differently. In our work we use the whole sign house system — one of the oldest and, in our experience, most reliable. Whole sign simply means every house is exactly one full zodiac sign, all the same size (30°). It keeps the chart clean and makes each house easy to read: one house, one sign.
The 12 astrological houses and their meanings
Here is what each of the 12 houses in astrology represents.
1st house — self and identity. Always the same as your ascendant sign, the first house is about your appearance, how you meet other people, and the strong life themes you carry this lifetime.
2nd house — money and self-worth. This house covers how you value yourself, your natural resources and talents, and your relationship with money, finances and abundance.
3rd house — communication and mind. The third house is your communication style — how you think, reason and talk with others day to day. It also connects to your early environment, siblings and neighbours.
4th house — home and roots. This house holds your roots and what you carry through genetic, behavioural and emotional inheritance. It’s your private inner world and sense of home.
5th house — creativity and joy. The fifth house is creation, self-expression, play and children. It shows how you express your creative gifts in the world — art, dance, song, and anything you make.
6th house — health and routines. This house governs your everyday health, the daily routines you need to feel well, and your work and service to others.
7th house — relationships. The seventh house is partnership: the relationships you seek and attract, how you show up in them, and what challenges and growth they bring.
8th house — transformation and healing. A deep house, the eighth covers crises, healing and transformation, intimacy, and shared resources such as a partner’s money. It’s where profound change happens through closeness.
9th house — meaning and expansion. The ninth house is discovery, travel, higher learning, mentorship and the search for your inner truth.
10th house — career and calling. This house is your public imprint — your profession and life mission, and how you contribute to the world in a powerful way.
11th house — community and future. The eleventh house is society and the greater whole: friends, groups, networks, media and the platforms that let you reach many people.
12th house — the subconscious and spirit. The final house holds your innermost self — the subconscious, dreams, spirituality and past lives, plus the qualities you weren’t able to fully express growing up.

A house gets “louder” when planets live there in your birth chart, or when a planet transits through it. So a good place to start is to notice which houses hold your planets — those are your main life storylines right now. Empty houses aren’t a problem; they simply tend to be quieter and less central at this stage of life.
Next, look at the sign on each house. The sign describes how you tend to act in that area, while the house tells you where the action happens. Put together — planet, sign and house — and the chart becomes a remarkably clear map of your life.
